Summer 2017 Newsletter

Summer, 2017

I know, I’ve missed a few months of newsletters. Sorry but I’ve been busy….stop yelling at me!!

We’ve moved most of our more frequent communications to Facebook and Instagram. Photos and videos seems to be the best way to message for restaurants, and we are having fun with it. We have a very talented young lady helping us with our photography and postings so check out her work here:

The best thing about our Texas summers is that fresh fish is readily available around the country. It’s a great way to lighten up the menu but still have a great breadth of offerings. Late May is the startup for Alaskan halibut and Pacific Coast salmon, and it’s also a good time to get our hands on fresh scallops from New Bedford, MA. All of these seafoods are shipped overnight fresh for us. I order on Monday, and they show up Tuesday ready to go!!. And we also have fantastic King crab from Dutch Harbor, AK. It is the only seafood delivered frozen as the season is so short and the catches so large that it is the only and best way to preserve flavor. I promise you cannot get better seafood anywhere in the DFW area than at Sip & Savor.
Combined with a great beef filet and pork tenderloin we have really nice offerings for your enjoyment this summer.

Some of you may not know that we started offering a Neighborhood Night menu every Tuesday through Thursday. This is either a two or three course meal at an unbeatable price and is a great way to get a wholesome midweek meal without having to cook for yourself. Really, far better than a greasy burger! You can find the weekly offering on Facebook and Instagram and our web page at sipsavor.com. Reservations are usually not necessary but always recommended.

AND, (yes, I’ve got a lot of pent up news) we also have a weekly wine tasting. We call it “Thursday’s Flight” and it is usually selected to go with the week’s Neighborhood Nights menu.

For example, next week we are serving our Akaushi flank steak with Chimichurri and balsamic mushrooms with a dessert of strawberry Ice cream sundae, and our tasting is Colomé Malbec from Argentina, Spring Valley Vineyards “Uriah” from Walla Walla, WA and Ehren Jordan Day Zinfandel from Sonoma County. All three wines are great by themselves and even better with a good steak. You can do one, the other or both and have an enjoyable time. If you have a party of 8 or more we’ll give you private space with a reservation (space available).

I haven’t told you about our new dish preparations or our garden or all of our fabulousd new wines or….but that’s for another time. Thanks for reading this through and hope to see you this summer.

As I write this we are in between last week’s new low high temperature and this week’s new high temperatures.  And looking for several inches of rain this weekend.  Crazy weather, but we have the right menu for all Winter conditions.

Our apps now feature a Hot Crab and Artichoke Dip with homemade toast points that’ll warm you up, and our Tomato Soup in Puff Pastry is the epitome of Winter comfort.

We’ve been receiving our Pacific Coast Swordfish from both Santa Barbara and San Diego docks and it is a beautiful fish on the plate, served with our savory rice pilaf and lemon dill cream sauce.

If you are in a comfort mood, try our slow braised Bone-In Short Rib over Italian carnaroli risotto, or our Gulf Shrimp & Grits.  And if you are a meat and potato kind of diner we have our awesome Heritage Filet Mignon and NY Strip Steaks paired with our potato pavé, a stacked and sauted potato with blue cheese crumbles.  I also want to mention our hand made Spinach Gnocchi served in a creamy Mornay Sauce is fast becoming our favorite side dish.

This month and next we are adding several wines to the list, mostly reds, that will give you more choices from Napa, Sonoma, Oregon and Washington.  Look for new Cabs, blends and pinots and maybe a random zin too!!
Also, ask to see the Proprieter List of wines that we sell by the bottle only….there are some great buys on limited quantity wines.

Events
Weekday Glass Specials – Enjoy a carafe of your favorite wine for the price of a glass from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.  A carafe is a glass and a half, and you can select any wine on the glass list.

Friday and Saturday February 10 and 11 – We are extending the Valentines celebration opportunities these two evenings by offering our full menu and some special entree and desserts.  All throughout the Valentines celebration we are reducing the number of reservations we are accepting to provide a more intimate and romantic setting.  Low light, flowers, soft music and space between tables is what we are planning for you.

Valentines Day Tuesday, February 14 – We are serving up a Four Course Prixe Fixe dinner with choices of Filet Mignon and Shrimp, Lobster or Swrodfish and accompaniments for each.  Appetizer, soup or salad and dessert are included for $68.95 per person plus tax and gratuity.  You can see our menu on Open Table at https://www.opentable.com/sip-and-savor

The hunt may be over.  We have been developing a gnocchi dish over the last few months that is inspired by a favorite restaurant of ours in Carmel, California.  We travelled there again recently and revisited their dish.  But to my dismay, they are not using the same recipe and I suspect it is becasue the chef that invented the dish opened his own restaurant.  However I believe I have finally reconstructed it and we now have a Spinach Gnocchi in a parmesan cream sauce as a side dish as well as an accompaniment to our chicken dish.  I hope you get the chance to try it out and let us know what you think.  The hunt may be over, but you get to decide.

Salmon season is over and we are now serving a great Pacific coast swordfish, flown in fresh to us from Santa Barbara, California.  We serve it as an 8 ounce filet simply prepared and accompanied by our butternut squash rice pilaf, $29.00

In our last newsletter I announced our new source for Alaskan Red King Crab.  They are now our thiird best seller on the menu so our guests have voted their approval.  Give them a try, $30.00 for two large three ounce cakes and a great Arugula salad.  You can see our full menu at

Our list continues to represent many small production wineries that are still family owned.  I will say it is harder than ever to find small producers of affordable Napa wines, as the cost per ton of Napa fruit just keeps going up.  It is my pleasure (job?) to seek these wines out and get them in your glass at great prices.  Here’s some wonderful new wines on the list with bottle and glass pricing:
NV Mumm Napa sparkling, $52/$12
2013 Shafer Merlot, $89/$19
and from Sonoma County:
2013 Judge  Palmer Sauvignon Blanc, $72/$15
2012 Judge Palmer Malbec. $84/$18
and from Austria:
2013 Sohm & Kracher Gruner Veltliner, $65/$14
Also, ask to see the Proprieter List of wines that we sell by the bottle only….there are some great buys on limited quantity wines.

Weekday Glass Specials – Enjoy a carafe of your favorite wine for the price of a glass from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.  A carafe is a glass and a half, and you can select any wine on the glass list.

New Year’s Eve – We have a great fixed price four course menu on Saturday, December 31st for $75 plus tax and gratuity.  Make reservations early!!          http://sipsavor.com/reservations/

Fall 2016 Newsletter

October 2016

Savors
Our Fall menu is now fully up and running.  Even though it is still warmish, we just couldn’t wait to get some of our cold weather items on the menu.  The extra few weeks of weather allows us to make small changes too, and I feel we have a great menu that reflects the foods of the season.
You can see our new menu here http://sipsavor.com/dinner-menu/ .

Highlights:
We’ve finally found a source for first quality USA wild caught Red King Crab.  Some of you know that we stopped selling crab about a year ago because our supplier would not divulge the source.  At the time it was our #1 selling item, but I just couldn’t buy it without knowing the source and who/how it was landed.  Our new crab is true Alaskan King Crab and tastes fantastic.  We have a Crab cocktail and Crab Cakes on the menu.

We’ve also added our short rib and risotto, and we top this off with a beautiful mushroom gravy made with Oyster mushrooms from Fun Guys Mushrooms in Denton.  get it?  Funghi’s?

And we now serve Duroc Pork Osso Buco, slow cooked for hours and served with a Tuscan bean soup.  Amazing comfort food.

We still have Alaskan Halibut and Salmon while they are in season, and we have our great filet mignon served with asparagus and Red White and Blue potatoes.  Delicious!

We’d love to see you this Fall.  You can make reservations for dinner or brunch at http://sipsavor.com/reservations/

Our list has grown a bit.  We are now over 100 wines and we serve 75 by the glass.  The best way to select your beverage is to taste, and our professional wait staff will provide samples to help you find a wine to pair with your meal, or to just sip and enjoy.

New this month are:
Freemark Abbey wines of distinction including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay
Reginato sparkling malbec
Elyse Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and a great field blend named Nero Misto

Events and other news

Freemark Abbey wine tasting
Wednesday, October 5, 2016
6pm to 730pm

This month we have the privelege of tasting five Freemark Abbey wines.  This winery started in 1886.  Many milestones have been achieved over those many years, including the first female winemaker, the first tasting room in Napa Valley, one of the first vineyard designated wines, and one of 12 wineries that competed in the now famous “The judgement of Paris” in 1976 that put Napa on the map as a World class wine grape growing region.

We will be tasting the following wines:
2013 California Viognier, $29
2013 Napa Valley Chardonnay, $29
2013 Napa Valley Merlot, $39
2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, $49
2012 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, $69

$15 for the tasting and the fee is waived with a purchase of 3 bottles or more.  Bottle pricing is at or below winery prices and offered on this date only.  Rsvp at http://sipsavor.com and note tasting.  If you will dine with us this night mention dinner too.

See you upstairs on Wednesday!
